Evaluation for Depict Production

Evaluation for depict production
As a group we decided to do a depict film that would be about something meaningful. Hoping that it would inspire people to treat with one other with love and passion because the short film is about bullying. At the beginning of our coursework, I had someone in mind to play the role of the main character. I had a vision of what I wanted to make. After waiting for the actor, she cancelled on me the last minute, but I was determined to find someone who would fit my vision. I personally didn’t want to be an actor in the short film because I prefer to be behind the camera helping to create the imagery I had in mind. I did find another good actor to play the role. For this to happen only me and another team mate had to film due to its was in are spear period. We started to film the first few scenes, I must admit filming the type of shots I was trying to do was a bit complicated and tricky. I showed the footage to the team, but the videos aren’t good to use so we desired to look at what we could to do to improve, but unfortunately, she wasn’t able to continue do due to family issues. At this point my team was running out of time so I had to step in with my other team mate. We then had to become the actors. Soon the issues were resolved we started filming straight away.  Luckily, we had all the equipment we needed. The only prop we used was bags.
Camera use
Before we started to film we did a shot list to give as an idea of what and how we would shoot. This did help a lot. In the first few scenes there is a lot of movement. We used a tracking shot right at the beginning with a close-up shot. Unfortunately, we didn’t have anything that could follow the actor on wheels steady (I did try a wheeling chair, but it didn’t work because the chair kept going in different direction), so I was trying to hold the camera by hand as carefully and still while moving with the actor. Throughout the filming we used various technique. With the shot distance we mainly used a long shot, medium shot and a close-up. I would say the medium shots was mostly used as it was more effective.                   We also used different camera angles depending on the dialogue. There was a scene where the bully was shouting at the victim. Therefor we used a high angle to show that the bully is more powerful in that scene. We did use a low angle for when she opened the door. We did experiment with what we could understand. At the very end of the video there was one more last camera movement which was a tilt. As we used a public place to film there was natural light (Ambient lighting), so we didn’t use any flash or back lights.
Editing
After we finished, we started to look through the footage to see how good or bad and to see if we need to retake the scenes. With the sort of story, we went for there was a lot of dialogue. Many was short takes had to be used because it helps to tell the story, so they’re was a lot of cuts. There was one fade which we used right at the end with helped it to create a dramatic scene. There was also a time at the beginning where a black out was 1 second long to slow the pace down because it was a fast pace due to the movement and the background noise. At the very end of the story, you can see the actor sliding down the door with negative emotions. To make this even more obvious we desired to use a colour fade which then changed it to black and white. We modified the setting so that the colour fade wouldn’t be so sharp.                                                                                                                                   I know that we’ve used a match on action when the actor opened the door and with that is was also a low angle view. We did use a shot reverse shot when the dialogue was in motion which helped create more attention in the scene.
Sound
We used both synchronous and asynchronous in the film. We used the orderly sound from the footage (camera) and we added the sound of the heart beat at the beginning to help build the attention. we also used a voice overlap on the main footage to help show more emotion that the actor is going through. I would say we sort of used a non-diegetic sound when we used the heart beat sound. We did in fact use an ambient sound because there were no odd silences in the film.
